Hello     Lasers     Detectors     About Us     Contact Us     What's New

We design manufacture and sell lasers and detectors using foundries

We employ 8 years of experience in working with foundries for you, our customer.  We design the epitaxial material, design the masks and processing steps.  We then follow up with the selected foundry, and use process-specific characterization to verify the design during processing.  We then test for performanceWe work with partners for qualification and reliability testing.  We have partners for medium-size scale manufacturing of optical components, such as TO-8 TO-46 TO-56, and / or custom packages.

The focus is to serve our customer's needs with the lowest possible expense and with the lowest risk

Company background

The photonics components industry is progressing toward a model in which design houses can be very efficient.  In particular, the establishment of foundries in the Photonics industry allows for a low cost, low risk ,development of proven active components.  High power lasers, and several detector designs are readily availabe.

We are located in Central New jersey, a privately held limited liability company (LLC).

Our Team
Dr. Rafael Ben-Michael (Owner)

Dr. Ben-Michael has deep and extensive experience in different capacities in the photonics industry and fiber based optical communications technology for the past 18 years.  His experience ranges from the system level to the individual component design.  Dr. Ben-Michael received a B.A., an M.Sc. and a Ph.D. degree in Physics and Electro-optics from the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology where he worked on strained layer quantum well InGaAs/GaAs lasers.  Rafi was a researcher in Bell Laboratories, starting as a post-doctorate researcher.  He was promoted to be an R&D manager in AT&T Labs and later in several start ups and medium size companies such as JDSU, where he led a device design group responsible for detectors.  Rafi also has background in patent assertion consulting.  For the past five years Rafi was involved in designing and developing optical device components products for the defense and medical industries.  Rafi is intimate with working with prime contractors, and developing components that meet or exceed strict reliability requirements.  He is accustomed to tight development budgets and schedules.  He is very aware of the actual costs of running a very high technology production business.  During his diverse career, Rafi filed for several patents, and he holds 14 US patents in the diverse fields of optical components, optical communication, and data link protocols.  He also participated in standards bodies – developing data-link standards in the ITU-T, and he authored and published in excess of 25 technology papers.
